Tanegashima is an island in southern Japan, part of the Ōsumi Islands, the northernmost part of the Ryukyu Islands, an island chain stretching from just south of Kyushu (the southernmost of the 4 big islands of Japan) to just east of Taiwan. Tanegashima and the rest of the Ōsumi Islands are part of Kagoshima Prefecture.
Tanegashima is the 2nd largest of the Ōsumi Islands by land area, after Yakushima, but it has 3 times as many people as Yakushima, a round island that is mostly forest. Tanegashima, on the other hand, has a longer coastline than Yakushima and is divided into the city of Nishinoomote (the northern part of the island) and the 2 towns of Nakatane (the central part of the island) and Minamitane (the southern part of the island).
Tanegashima is most famous for Tanegashima Space Center, the main rocket launch facility for JAXA, which is located on the southeastern corner of the island, in Minamitane. It is also famous as where the Tanegashima gun was introduced to Japan, an event celebrated in the annual Tanegashima Gun Festival in Nishinoomote. The tiny island of Mageshima, located a little to the west of the city of Nishinoomote in northern Tanegashima, is within Nishinoomote city limits. The towns of Nakatane and Minamitane on Tanegashima, together with the town of Yakushima which covers the entire island of Yakushima as well as the tiny island of Kuchinoerabu-jima, together make up Kumage District, although the city of Nishinoomote is not part of Kugmage District.

Robotics;Notes and Robotics;Notes DaSH are both set on the island of Tanegashima. Most of the main locations in both games, such as Chuo Tanegashima High in Nakatane near the middle of the island and Tanegashima Space Center in Minamitane in the southeastern corner of the island, are located on Tanegashima. There are some events that take place in other parts of Japan, such as the ROBO-ONE tournament and the Tokyo Expo, but most of what happens in both games happens on Tanegashima.
A detailed real-life map of Tanegashima with its main locations, attractions, and festival dates can be found at this link, courtesy of the Tanegashima Tourism Association. Many of these locations, attractions, and festivals in this map also occur in the Robotics;Notes games (e.g. the Yoira~Iki Festival happens in both the first game and the anime, and can also be found in that map, Chikura-no-Iwaya and Uchugaoka Park are locations in both the first game and anime as well as on that map, the Tanegashima Chuo High School on the map corresponds to Chuo Tanegashima High in the games and anime, and there are many other examples).
