GunBuild-1 is the years long effort of Chuo Tanegashima High's Robot Research Club to produce a functioning, full-scale replica of the giant robot Gunvarrel. Misaki Senomiya, Akiho's older sister, began work on it while she was in high school before abandoning it upon graduation.

During the events of Robotics;Notes, however, this effort is on its last legs; the only club members remaining are main characters Kaito Yashio and Akiho Senomiya, and of them, only Akiho is truly interested in doing the impossible and completing the project before they graduate. Yet, even with no end in sight, Akiho presses on, dragging an unwilling Kaito along the way. Over the course of the story, the two continue to work on building the robot, recruiting new club members as the story progresses to help out. Slowly but surely, the Robot Research Club works to make their dream a reality.

While JAXA offers to help the Robot Research Club in building a giant robot, they consider the GunBuild-1 design impractical, as does Subaru Hidaka. Eventually, Akiho is persuaded to do a more practical design by Subaru and is able to enlist JAXA personnel to help out in building this new robot, which is called GunBuild-2.

GunBuild-1 is mostly abandoned after the club switches its attention to GunBuild-2. However, eventually GunBuild-2 is destroyed and they need a working giant robot. Monopole motors and many other enhancements are made to the original GunBuild-1 to make it actually practical and functional, and it is dubbed Super GunBuild-1.
